HIKE (2021)
Writer/Director/Actor/Animator/Editor: Josh Lange
Time on project: August-September 2021
Week Zero: July 25th-31st
Tasks: Research, Gearing Up
Before classes got in gear, fellows got a peek at the online course material and signed up for the Slack channel to connect with others in the course. My MPC coworkers Iva Carrasquillo and Todd Thornley were also chosen for this "version 6" session of the Fellowship. Mentor David Williams was assigned to the group of fellows in my cohort. In doing my research, I saw that he had worked his way up to instructor not long after graduating from the Fellowship himself. His Fellowship short contained a lot of horror work inspired by James Cameron's Aliens, and seeing his modded Metahuman characters showed me the customizing potential these pre-made assets could have.
In preparation, I watched shorts on the Unreal Engine Vimeo page, and reached out to a few filmmakers whose short films really struck me: Addy Ghani's great humor and epic number of extras, Kristian Jensen's surreal retro visuals, and the wild laughs and action from Aaron Arendt's hotdog zombies. Each conversation taught me about what to expect and how to plan for the onslaught of the next month of the Fellowship.
I closed the week out wrapping things up at work, and didn't have a solid idea on a single story idea because I was so busy. However, a few different options surfaced that I'd workshop in week one when classes officially got started. At home, my wife and I continued house hunting, and started finding attractive options...
