Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Director: Justin Lin
Company:  Proof, Inc.
Role:  Previsualization Artist

Time on project:  May 2015 - September 2015
Previs Supervisors:  Alex Vegh, Earl Hibbert

Star Trek Beyond was an offsite previs show on the Paramount Lot that later moved to a production office in South Pasadena, where Justin Lin and his editors joined us under one roof. This was the first show that allowed me to use my familiarity with space movies to help inform my animation of the ships. The alien swarms were a major challenge to animate and revise with the specific notes that came back, but we rose to the challenge.  It was a tough project, but I think the sequences we did had a good mix of dynamic compositions, intensity, and believable physics, and I was particularly proud to have worked on the "swarm wave" part of the climactic end battle.

Sequences on which I worked:

Arrival at Yorktown Station
Enterprise Attack
Yorktown Battle

Crews are always changing, so I decided to create a giant picture and took separate photos of people as they came on board. Left to right: Robbie Consing, James Doh, Jennifer Van Horn, Chris Batty, Miro Skandera, Mark Austin, Shahar Eldar, Ty Tompson, Michael Grawert, Jeremiah Forkkio, George Antzoulides, Myself, Earl Hibbert, Jourdan Nounann, Marcela Coto, Jeanne Jo, Mike Solorzano, Ryan Schubert, Cameron Ward.

Ran into LL Cool J on the Paramount lot during a lunch break. Very nice guy.

We animated ships flying at all kinds of heights on Star Trek Beyond, so I decided to make a chart that helped show the accurate speeds within each location, relative to a planet.
